Visualizing Polymorphism - The Journey from Molecules to Crystals

Polymorphism, the ability of a molecular species to crystallize in different packings based upon different crystallization conditions, observed often among organic compounds. Different crystal packings of compounds are responsible for the smooth taste of chocolate as well as the ability of drug compounds to dissolve in the body. This animation illustrates the preparation of two different polymorphs of acetaminophen under two different crystallization conditions based on data collected at Aptuit. Form A, the more stable form, is the commercially available form and is not directly compressible into tablets. Form B, the less stable form, is directly compressible into tablets without excipients, but is physically not stable enough to commercialize.
